The IT Industry Continues to Grow

Wendy Wayne

Over the past five or six years, most industries have experienced a period of contraction. However, the IT industry has bucked this trend. Growth in the industry has slowed from 8% from1994 to 2004 to 3.4% since 1994. However, there is still growth and many predict that there will be more to come. As an example, TechUK, the UK’s leading technology trade association, have recently announced that their members are planning to create 500,000 new jobs by 2020.

Finding Work in the IT Industry

For those with the right skills the IT industry provides well-paid jobs. The majority of which are advertised on specialist IT job boards like the one at . Every day companies post hundreds of new IT jobs there. The majority of those advertising are UK companies, but many firms from other parts of the world also post vacancies on this job board.

Progressing Within the Industry

There is plenty of opportunity for progression within the IT industry. However, it is important to realise that it is still a competitive one. Those who are the best qualified are the ones that get the best jobs. Keeping your qualifications up to date and building on your knowledge is therefore vital.

Once you have worked on a few projects you will be able to apply for and be considered for management roles. These jobs pay much better and offer better job security because they are permanent salaried jobs rather than contractor roles. They often come with a package of benefits including, on occasion, access to a company pension scheme. It makes sense to take on supervisory roles whenever possible throughout your career. Doing so will demonstrate to prospective employers that you have the ability to take on responsibility and manage projects. The more supervisory experience you have the easier it will be for you to take on a project management role.
