In the 160 years since the first official World Expo in London, the famous world exposition has yet to visit the MENASA region, which covers the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. In 2020, this could be set to change. Though there are bids from Turkey, Thailand, Russia and Brazil, the UAE have put forward a World Expo bid for the first time, and look likely to secure the event which would be a real honour for the region.
The UAE World Expo bid revolves around the theme of connected thinking, with the core message being: Connecting minds, creating the future. If the bid is successful the exposition will take place in the country’s candidate city of Dubai. With the collaboration being at the forefront of the bid, Dubai, a city built through the teamwork of many communities over the last 50 years, is an ideal fit. Not only does the history of the destination fit well with the proposed expo theme, but Dubai is particularly well equipped for a significant event.
Dubai is a city known for its hospitality, boasting 80,000 hotel rooms and excellent logistic systems. Almost two thirds of the world’s population are able to reach Dubai in under 8 hours. If the UAE World Expo bid is chosen the exact venue has been announced as the Dubai Trade Center –Jebel Ali. Due to its 438 hectare site and excellent transport connections. The Trade Center is located nearby the successful Jebel Ali Port (one of the world’s busiest) and near the new Al Maktoum international airport too. It is thought that the venue would become a long lasting legacy for the city should the World Expo be held here, working as a space for organisations and nations to work together for many years to come.
Why choose Dubai as the 2020 World Expo host?
In a time where global issues are highly interconnected, the theme is the main attraction for those backing this biggest of Dubai exhibitions. There has never been a better time for individuals, societies and nations to work together for rapid advancements and a peaceful future. The UAE have promised that if Dubai is chosen it will be an excellent platform for this collaboration to being; encouraging the sharing of potential roadmaps for global development and helping assist the formation of new partnerships.
So far the UAE have gained support from recognisable figures including Microsoft giant Bill Gates and Former US President Bill Clinton. However, it’s the general public worldwide that the UAE must now reach.
